The Circle of Fifths

The Circle of Fifths maps the relationship between keys, key signatures and relative major and minor scales.

The Circle of Fifths

The Circle of Fifths is a visual map of the relationships between musical keys.

It organises the 12 major keys around the outside of the circle, with each neighbouring key separated by a perfect fifth. The corresponding relative minor keys appear inside the circle because each major key and its relative minor use the same notes and key signature.

At first, the diagram can look complicated. However, it follows a small number of repeatable patterns. Once you understand those patterns, the circle can help you:

  • Work out key signatures
  • Identify relative major and minor keys
  • Find closely related keys
  • Locate the main chords within a key
  • Transpose chord progressions
  • Understand common key changes

How the Circle Is Organised

The major keys are arranged around the outside of the circle. Starting from C and moving clockwise, each new key is a perfect fifth higher:

C – G – D – A – E – B – F♯/G♭ – D♭/C♯ – A♭ – E♭ – B♭ – F

Moving anticlockwise takes you down a perfect fifth, or up a perfect fourth:

C – F – B♭ – E♭ – A♭ – D♭/C♯ – F♯/G♭ – B – E – A – D – G

Because the system repeats, travelling all the way around eventually returns you to C.

The minor keys shown inside the circle are the relative minors of the major keys beside them. For example, C major pairs with A minor, G major with E minor, D major with B minor, and F major with D minor.

Each pair uses the same seven notes and the same key signature, but a different tonic.

Why the Circle Uses Fifths

Neighbouring keys on the circle are closely related because they differ by only one note.

C major: C – D – E – F – G – A – B

G major: G – A – B – C – D – E – F♯

Only one note has changed: F has become F♯. Moving clockwise again gives D major, which keeps F♯ and adds C♯. Each clockwise step keeps the existing sharps and adds one more.

The same principle works anticlockwise with flats. F major adds B♭, and B♭ major keeps B♭ and adds E♭. Each anticlockwise step keeps the existing flats and adds another.

The Order of Sharps

The order in which sharps appear is always:

F – C – G – D – A – E – B

Each clockwise movement adds the next sharp in the sequence. E major sits four positions clockwise from C, so it contains F♯, C♯, G♯ and D♯.

The Order of Flats

The order in which flats appear is:

B – E – A – D – G – C – F

This is the reverse of the sharp order.

Each anticlockwise movement adds the next flat in the sequence. A♭ major sits four positions anticlockwise from C, so it contains B♭, E♭, A♭ and D♭.

Reading Key Signatures from the Circle

C major sits at the top because it contains no sharps or flats. Moving clockwise, G major has one sharp, D major has two, and A major has three. Moving anticlockwise, F major has one flat, B♭ major has two, and E♭ major has three.

Once you know the number of accidentals, use the fixed sharp or flat order to identify which notes are changed. D major has two sharps, so its signature contains F♯ and C♯. E♭ major has three flats, giving B♭, E♭ and A♭.

Relative Major and Minor Keys

Every major key has a relative minor key that uses the same notes and key signature. The relative minor begins on the sixth degree of the major scale.

The sixth degree of C major is A, so A minor is its relative minor. Both scales contain C, D, E, F, G, A and B, but C is the tonic of C major and A is the tonic of A minor.

The relationship works in both directions. To find the relative major of a minor key, locate the major key paired with it on the circle.

Why Some Keys Have Two Names

At the bottom of the Circle of Fifths, some positions are labelled with two key names. This happens because the sharp and flat sides meet at keys that can be spelled in two ways while producing the same pitches on a modern equal-tempered instrument.

F♯ major

F♯ – G♯ – A♯ – B – C♯ – D♯ – E♯

G♭ major

G♭ – A♭ – B♭ – C♭ – D♭ – E♭ – F

These scales sound the same on the guitar, but their notes are named differently. They are enharmonic keys. The same principle applies to D♭ major and C♯ major, G♯ minor and A♭ minor, D♯ minor and E♭ minor, and B♭ minor and A♯ minor.

G♯ minor

G♯ – A♯ – B – C♯ – D♯ – E – F♯

A♭ minor

A♭ – B♭ – C♭ – D♭ – E♭ – F♭ – G♭

Both spellings are valid. The one used depends on the musical context and which notation is clearer.

Closely Related Keys

Keys next to one another on the circle share six of their seven scale notes. For C major, the neighbouring keys are F major and G major, while A minor shares its key signature.

This is why movement between neighbouring keys often sounds smooth. Songwriters and composers frequently use these relationships when changing key or introducing chords from nearby tonal areas.

Finding the Main Chords in a Major Key

The circle can help you locate the three primary major chords in a key:

  • I, the tonic chord
  • IV, the subdominant chord
  • V, the dominant chord

Choose a major key on the circle. The selected key is I, the key immediately anticlockwise is IV, and the key immediately clockwise is V.

Finding the Relative Minor Chord

The relative minor is the vi chord of a major key. In C major, the four chords are C, F, G and Am. In G major, they are G, C, D and Em.

A common progression is:

I – V – vi – IV

In C major this becomes C – G – Am – F. In G major it becomes G – D – Em – C. The chord names change, but the scale-degree relationship remains the same.

Using the Circle to Transpose Progressions

Transposing means moving music into a different key while preserving the relationships between its notes or chords.

A C-major progression of C – F – G is I – IV – V. In G major, those same functions are G – C – D.

The circle makes these relationships easier to identify without rebuilding every key from the beginning. For more complex progressions, Roman numerals remain the clearest way to preserve chord relationships.

Moving Around the Circle in Chord Progressions

Moving anticlockwise represents descending fifths, or ascending fourths. This type of movement is common in tonal harmony.

E – A – D – G – C

A progression such as Dm7 – G7 – Cmaj7 follows the same relationship: D moves to G and G moves to C. This is a ii–V–I progression in C major.

The circle helps visualise root movement, but it does not by itself determine chord quality or function. Those still depend on the key and musical context.

What the Circle Does Not Tell You

The Circle of Fifths is a reference map, not a set of rules. It does not automatically tell you:

  • Which chord must come next
  • Which chord voicing to use
  • How long a chord should last
  • Which melody should be played
  • Whether every note must belong to one scale
  • Every possible key change or borrowed chord

It shows relationships between keys, key signatures and tonal centres. How those relationships are used remains a musical choice.

How to Practise Using the Circle

Do not try to memorise every part of the diagram at once. Begin with the most practical relationships.

Exercise 1: Key Signatures

Choose a major key and identify whether it uses sharps or flats, how many accidentals it contains and which notes are changed.

Exercise 2: Relative Minor

Choose a major key and find its relative minor, then reverse the process.

Exercise 3: I, IV and V

Choose a major key and use the keys immediately on either side to find I, IV and V.

Exercise 4: Transposition

Write I – V – vi – IV in three different major keys.

Exercise 5: Move Around the Circle

Play major chords clockwise, then anticlockwise, and listen to the consistent relationship between neighbours.

Why the Circle of Fifths Matters

The Circle of Fifths brings several areas of music theory together in one diagram. It shows how major keys are related, how sharps and flats accumulate, which major and minor keys share a signature, why some keys have two names, how to find common chord relationships and how progressions move between keys.

You do not need to use the circle every time you play. Its value is that it makes the structure behind keys and harmony easier to see. As these relationships become familiar, you will gradually rely less on the diagram and recognise them automatically.
